BRAKES

Brakes are a vital component of your car. When brakes start to fail, you need to replace them immediately.  At JCR Performance,  car maintenance includes checking the brake system and ensuring it is in tip-top condition.

Is It Time To Change Your  Brakes?

If you see brake fluid on the inside of your tire, have a mechanic check your brakes right away.

Brakes that squeal or rub should be replaced or fixed as soon as possible, preferably within a few weeks that the malfunction was noted. Keep in mind that the emergency brake is usually just one set of brakes on the back axle of a car or truck.

Brake System Components

The brake system is a hydraulic system with the following parts:

  • Brake lines
  • Brake pads
  • Calipers
  • Master cylinder
  • Rotors
  • The ABS system, including the ABS computer

Most modern cars have four-wheel disc brakes, while older models may have shoes and drums. When you raise the handle or push the emergency brake pedal, a wire linked to the emergency brake handle pulls shoes or pads against the rotor.

Changing brake pads is the most common repair. Insufficient pad pressure might damage the rotors. If they go too low, the calipers may overextend, requiring replacement.

We can generally machine the rotors to make them look good again. Old brakes that wear down too quickly will have to be replaced with new brake parts. Other brakes only be turned once, while some rotors can't be changed at all.

How the Brake System Works

The brake system is hydraulic. Essentially, when you brake, the master cylinder pushes brake fluid through the lines. When the fluid reaches the calipers, the pressure closes them, grabbing the rotors.

A leaking brake component reduces the pressure needed to shut the calipers on one or more brakes. Brake lines are usually metal due of the pressure. The lines to the calipers are constructed of rubber with high-pressure fittings. Most brake lines are metal because of the pressure. The lines to the calipers are constructed of rubber with strong connectors to handle the high pressure.
